The savvy traveler's guide to saving money on travel, getting extra perks, and earning free hotel nights and airplane tickets.

Save money on your reservations

If you simply go to a popular travel booking site, like Expedia, to book your hotel reservations, you'll wind up paying more for your reservations, while missing out on extra benefits and reward points. To pay less and get more, check out our comprehensive guides to booking airfare, hotels, and rental cars.

Learn to take advantage of travel reward programs

Frequent flyer and hotel programs let you travel more often or more luxuriously. But, frequent flyer programs, in particular, can be difficult to take advantage of. Our Step-by-Step Guide to Booking Award Tickets can help you get the most value out of frequent flyer miles you earn from flying or credit cards. If you don't already understand the basics of frequent flyer miles and airline alliances, read the background information in our Award Tickets 101: The Basics guide first.

Award Nights 101: Using Your Hotel Points provides more information about using hotel points to get free hotel nights.

Updates

  • Get a free Atlantis Resort vacation by taking advantage of status match opportunities created by the Wyndham's acquisition of La Quinta hotels. It has always been easy to get La Quinta to match elite status from other hotels, but it hasn't always been particularly worthwhile. Due to the acquisition you can convert La Quinta elite status into Platinum elite status with the Caesar's Total Rewards program, entitling you to a free annual visit to Atlantis in the Bahamas. /li>
  • The Hyatt credit card was recently updated. The new version of the card provides an opportunity to earn a second free night certificate (with $15,000 of spending), as well as earn "qualifying nights" towards Hyatt elite status. The introductory signup offer is 60,000 Hyatt points, making it one of the most valuable signup bonuses, and the card is still not subject to the Chase 5/24 rule. Existing cardholders may not be eligible for the signup bonus, but may want to upgrade their card.
  • Chase introduces a business version of the Freedom Unlimited Card. If you are willing and able to use a business credit card for your everyday spending, this is a better version of our top general-purpose reward card. You'll get a much nicer sign-up bonus, and the card won't show up on your personal credit report.
