Hilton Gold status comes with free continental breakfast (for two) at every brand in the Hilton program, which doesn't already provide free breakfast to everyone. The only exception are Hilton Grand Vacation clubs. And, you can get Gold level status simply by having the right credit card.
While you are only entitled to continental breakfast, many hotels will give you a full hot breakfast, and many other hotels will allow you to upgrade to a full breakfast for a small charge.

The Hilton Ascend card is the most straightforward path towards Hilton Gold status. Simply pay the $95 annual fee, and you'll have free breakfast on every stay. Spend $15,000 per year with the card, and you'll get a free weekend night at any of their hotels, including super-luxury hotels that can cost over $500 per night. There is also a business version of this card, with essentially the same benefits. | |

The high-end Hilton Aspire card give you automatic Hilton Diamond status (a step above Gold). Not only do you get free breakfast, you also get automatic executive club access, and some other valuable benefits. The Aspire card has a $450 annual fee, but comes with a variety of different annual credits that can offset the fee, and an annual uncapped weekend free night certificate, without any minimum spending requirement. | |

If you decide to get the Amex Platinum card, you'll get Hilton Gold status, along with its other valuable benefits. The Platinum card has a $550 fee, up to $400 of credits that are somewhat hard to take full advantage of, and a bunch of valuable other benefits. While it is always worthwhile to get the card, for a year, to take advantage of its generous signup bonus, it is hard to make a recommendation about whether to keep it or not. It depends on how much benefit you'll get from the credits and other benefits.
