You aren't always going to be able to use reward points for free travel. Sometimes, you are just going to need to pay for hotels, airplane tickets, and car rentals. When you do, you should pay as little as possible.

Hotels

The "best available rates" for most hotels are supposed to be the same across every website. Travel sites and hotels have contractual arrangements to maintain consistent pricing. However, these only apply to "standard, publicly available" rates.

It's easy to take advantage of "members-only" rates, "secret" hotel deals, packages and promotions, and various reward programs to get cheaper rates, richer rewards, or better benefits for your hotel reservations.

Airfare

Unlike hotels, prices for airplane tickets are almost always the same on every website. Saving money on airfare usually isn't about finding a cheaper fare for the same flights. It is about uncovering the cheapest flights that fit your travel plan.
