The "Discover it Miles" card is basically a 1.5% cash-back credit card, where you have to use your reward points as credits against travel purchases. But, Discover will double your rewards during the first year, letting you earn 3% back.

If you are willing to deal with the extra complexity, you may want to use the card as your general purpose reward card for a year, and then shift to another card when the bonus rewards end. It is even possible to periodically cancel and reapply for the Discover card, so that you can earn 3% on-and-off on an ongoing basis.

Just be aware, that Discover no longer offers any of the purchase protections (extended warranty, price protection, etc.) that are available from other good general purpose reward cards, and you'll still need to use some other card at stores that don't accept the Discover card. Automatic Protection for the Things You Buy with Your Credit Card

Business Version

Since Discover reports Business cards on your personal credit report, and doesn't offer a signup bonus on the Discover It Miles Business card, there aren't any reasons to get the business card instead of, or in addition to, the business version, unless you genuinely want a separate card for your business. Many people who are willing and able to get business cards will prefer the 2x Membership Reward points they can earn on any purchase with the Amex Blue for Business card.

Collecting the Signup Bonus

  • In lieu of a signup bonus, the Discover Card doubles your rewards for the entire first year you have the card.. At the end of the year, you'll receive a credit equal to the normal rewards you earned. In effect, that gives you the equivalent of 3% cashback, during your initial year.
  • You can also receive $75, if you apply through Amazon, and make an Amazon purchase. There is also a $50 statement credit offer, available through referral links.

Discover Deals

Discover operates an online shopping portal that gives you bonus rewards, or other savings, at many different merchants. Unlike most other online shopping portals, you sometimes earn extra rewards for purchases you make in-store (when using your Discover card).

The cash back rewards you earn from Discover Deals are doubled the first year you have the card, which can be very lucrative. For example, if Discover is offering 5% when shopping online at Walmart, you'll earn 10% cash back from the shopping portal, in addition to the 3% you'd get from the card itself. Discover Deals.

Other Notable Benefits

  • Annual $30 inflight wireless credit. Applied automatically when you use the card to purchase service.
