Collecting the Signup Bonus
Our base value for Marriott points is .7 cents per point. You can freely convert Marriott and SPG points, at a ratio of 3 Marriott points to 1 SPG point. So, you can use points you earn from the Ritz card to book award night at either Marriott and Starwood hotels. How Much are Hotel Points Worth?
- It is might be worth getting this card, just for the signup offer. The normal offer is two free nights at Tier 1-4 Ritz-Carlton hotels, valued at about $600 ($300 per night). You can get an extra 10,000 points by adding an authorized cardholder. In addition, the card comes with a $300 airline incidental. But since it can be hard to get full value from this credit, we only value it at 50% of its face value. But, the free night certificates expire after a single year, the airline incidental credit is very hard to use, and the card has a $450 annual fee. After subtracting the annual fee, and the opportunity cost of using the card for $4,000 of spending, the calculated net value of the sign-up is $450 (11 cents per dollar spent). If you can get decent value from the hotel certificates, the signup offer is pretty good. If you can use your certificates for a particularly valuable redemption, and/or can get good value from the card's airline incidental credit, the sign-up value can be pretty great. But, if there is some chance that you can't get good value from the certificates, you are better off with another card. The Best Credit Card Signup Bonuses.
- You can earn an additional 10,000 points by adding an authorized cardholder. They need to make a purchase during the first three months you have the card. This is factored into the calculated net value above.
- This card is NOT affected by the Chase 5/24 rule. You can still get approved, even if you have acquired more than five new credit cards over the past two years.
- You can earn the signup bonus once every two years. You are eligible for a Chase signup bonus, if you haven't already earned one, from the same card, during the past two years.
However, if you've been signing up for lots of credit cards, there is some risk to trying to get additional Chase cards. When Chase pulls your credit report for your application, they take a look at your overall number of accounts and recent inquiries. If you've been very active, there is a small chance that Chase will cancel all of your existing cards, due to screening procedures related to "breakout risk". If you don't want to risk losing access to your existing Chase cards, you might avoid signing up for any new Chase cards, once you've signed up for over 10 cards in the past two years. On the other hand, most people have been able to safely get new Chase cards even though they are well over that number.
Taking Advantage of the Airline Incidental Credit
The Ritz card's $300 annual credit can only be used for airline incidental expenses. However, unlike other incidental airline credits, you can use it to offset seat upgrade fees; and unlike the credit from Amex Platinum card, it isn't limited to a single airline.
The biggest drawback of the Ritz credit is that, alone among premium credit card travel credits, it is not applied automatically. After you've used the card to make a qualifying purchases, you need to remember to call in and make a reimbursement claim. This substantially increases the effort it takes to use the credit. Furthermore, it makes it more difficult to use the credit to purchase airline gift cards, which don't technically qualify for the credit. Rather than simply purchasing a gift card, and having a credit automatically (but incorrectly) applied, you will need to call in, and hope that the representative doesn't ask you what the charge was for. Get Full Value from Your Airline Incidental Credits.
As a result, many people will not wind up getting anywhere near full value from this credit. However, if you do spend a bunch of money each year on seat upgrades, baggage fees, and other incidental expenses; or if you are planning on purchasing a lounge membership; and you take the extra step to call in; you might be able to get full value from the credit, and lower the card's effective annual fee to only $150.
Because the credits are issued on a calendar-year basis, you can qualify for two credits the first year you have the card. For example, if you sign up for the card in August, you can get up to $100 credit for purchases made between August and December, and you can get take advantage of another $100 credit between the January and August.
Visa Infinite Air Credit
The Ritz card is one of only three credit cards that provides the Visa Infinite Air Credit. With this credit, you'll get $100 back, every time you make a round trip, domestic, economy-class reservation for two or more people through the Visa website. You can use this credit as often as you like, over the course of the year. For example, if you travel three times per year, on qualifying flights, you would get $300 in rebates. The Ritz card is the only one of the three cards that anyone can apply for. If this credit is particularly valuable to you, it can easily make it worthwhile to hold onto the Ritz card, especially if you can also take advantage of its hotel benefits (at Ritz hotels). However, if you have access to the CNB Crystal Infinite Card or UBS Infinite Card, and you don't make paid stays at Ritz hotels, they are usually a better option.
