If you stay at Hilton’s more than a few times per year, get one of the credit cards that gives you automatic Hilton Gold (or Diamond) status. You’ll get free breakfast with every stay, and a pretty good chance of a minor room upgrade.

Hilton Gold status comes with free continental breakfast (for two) at every brand in the Hilton program, which doesn't already provide free breakfast to everyone. The only exception are Hilton Grand Vacation clubs. While you are only entitled to continental breakfast, many hotels will just give you a full hot breakfast, and many other hotels will allow you to upgrade to a full breakfast for a small extra charge. If you don’t want breakfast, you can choose 1,000 bonus points instead.

At most hotels brands where everyone gets free breakfast, such as Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites, and Hampton, Gold members get their choice of free snacks or small quantities of Hilton points.

Gold status also comes with some other nice benefits, such as a better chance of upgrades to a slightly nicer room and an 80% bonus on points earned for stays. The Hilton Aspire card comes with Diamond status, instead of Gold. Diamond status gives you guaranteed access to any executive floor lounge at Conrad, Curio, Hilton, DoubleTree and Tapestry Collection hotels, an enhanced snack / bonus points benefit, a 100% points bonus (instead of 80%), a potential upgrade to a suite, and a 48-hour room guarantee.

There are three different credit cards that provide automatic Hilton gold or diamond status.

Amex Platinum Card Guide	If you have the Amex Platinum card, you already have access to Hilton gold status. It is one of the many benefits of this popular premium credit card. You just need to sign up for your status through the Amex website. If you want this card for its ongoing benefits, or already have one of the several varieties as a byproduct of collecting signup bonuses, you don’t need to get a separate Hilton credit card to get Gold status. Hilton Credit Card Guide	The Hilton Ascend card is the least expensive card that offers Hilton gold status. Simply pay the $95 annual fee and you'll have free breakfast on every stay in the Hilton program. Spend $15,000 per year with the card, and you'll get a free weekend night at any of their hotels, including super-luxury hotels that can cost over $500 per night. You also receive 10 free visits to a priority pass airport lounge. The business version can be a better option for people who are trying to stay under 5/24; or a second card for people who want to earn another free night certificate each year.
Hilton Credit Card Guide	For most people, the Hilton Aspire card is the best Hilton credit card option. It has a much higher annual fee ($495). But, it comes with a $250 credit that can be used to pay for your room at any of hundreds of Hilton resort hotels, a $250 airline incidental credit, a free night certificate when you first get the card, a free night certificate every year without having to meet a spending requirement, a full Priority Pass airport lounge membership, and Hilton Diamond status instead of Gold.
